This booklet can guide your students through a complete unit on writing different types of poems. I began this unit in my classroom with two days of poetry noticings. Students were given many poetry books to look through in small groups. They used post-it notes to mark features of poetry. For example, students found that not all poems rhyme and authors use unique spacing when writing poetry. After being immersed in poetry, they were given more structure and the opportunity to practice writing different types of poem. Each type of poem served as one or two days of poetry practice. Students loved trying out different types of poetry and at the end of our unit, each child had a complete book of poems to share with their families!
