Dictado

Dictado is an approach to spelling and language that comes from the Spanish word dictation.  Students are given a dictation sentence that includes skills addressed in the common core standards.

Monday  – After writing a sentence, the teacher goes over teaching points and helps students make corrections with a colored pencil or pen.

Tuesday – Students meet with their dictado partner and dictate the sentence to each other.  When finished, they self correct their sentences from their work on Monday.

Wednesday –  The teacher dictates the sentence and students correct from their work on Monday.

Thursday – Students meet with their dictado partner and dictate the sentence to each other.  When finished, they self correct their sentences from their work on Monday.

Friday – Students are given the sentence as a quiz.  The quiz is graded for reading, spelling, language and vocabulary.

Here’s a sample first sentence for first and second graders:

The name of my school is (insert your school name).

For this first week of school, the word school was the vocabulary word.  The name of the school would be capitalized so students would receive a point for the first letter of the sentence and the name of the school.   Students are expected to add the correct punctuation mark at the end.

As students learn what is expected, use the common core standards to develop sentences that help students learn the skills required for their grade level.
