What are contractions?

A contraction is a shortened version of two words.

They are often formed by removing a letter or multiple letters from the second word and adding an apostrophe.

Here are some examples of contractions:

Are + not = aren’t

could + not = couldn’t

I + am = I’m

she + had = she’d

does + not = doesn’t

This download contains 12 pages.

There are 10 worksheets for practice plus 2 pages of cards for creating contractions.

Here is what you will find:

The first two pages ask students to choose the correct two words from the word bank. These two words will combine to make the contractions on the right.

Next, students will break down the contractions. They will write in the two words used to form the contraction they find on the left.

There are then two pages of cards. These cards can be combined to form contractions.

Students can record their thinking on The Words Add Up. They will first write in the two word cards they chose and then write the contraction formed.

On the Contraction Sentences, students can begin choose two word cards. They will then fill in the boxes that include forming the contraction, writing a sentence and illustrating the sentence.

There are two pages titled contraction match. Students will draw a line between the matching boxes on the left and right.

The final page is titled Contraction Search. Students will circle the two small words in the sentence. Then, they will write the contraction the words form.
