As teachers we are always on the lookout for reading resources that are engaging and help us meet the Common Core State Standards. One of the biggest challenges as a classroom teacher is finding books and other materials that fit the curriculum and are easy to use. That is one reason we were excited about some new resources and we wanted to introduce our followers to them. We have recently been introduced to SNAP Learning’s new reading products that are aligned to the Common Core.
SNAP Learning has three reading products aligned to the Common Core for teachers and districts to help students with reading. Here is a quick look at what they offer:
The Close Reading Portfolio provides a series of interactive exercises that gives students practice in deriving central ideas and key supporting points in their reading material. The portfolios are geared towards grades 2 through 8, with portfolios that are written to cover specific social studies topics or Next Generation Science Standards. Each portfolio contains a teacher lesson plan along with tasks for students to complete such as quick writes, fluency practice and a book check. The materials include nonfiction features such as charts, tables, graphs and more. We like the page formatting of the books with wide line spacing and numbered paragraphs along with other features that make them student-friendly.
To make the portfolios even more beneficial to teachers, the lesson plans identify the CCSS standard covered in each lesson. We know that this will be a benefit to teachers looking to keep track of standards that have been addressed in the classroom.
The Guided Reading Digital Program provides teachers with an academic year-long access to all 130 English Language leveled K-6 books, PLUS interactive ebook versions, PLUS data analytics.
Teachers can download, print and distribute the leveled readers, students get individual access to the digital interactive ebooks versions (desktops, tablets, Android, iOS, interactive whiteboards), and teachers can also access a dashboard with data for each student on how they have performed in the comprehension quizzes and word exercises embedded within the interactive ebooks.
This library consists of nearly 500 English and Spanish titles and was developed to provide supplemental, grade specific reading material in history/social science and science topics. We especially loved the fact that there were varied genres in this library. We all know that we need to expose our students to different types of literature to help them grow as readers. Here you will find biographies, books, articles, and even speeches and letters to supplement your classroom library.
