If you’re like many teachers these days, then you might sometimes have grand ideas about taking tons of pictures of your students at different points during the year – first day, special projects, class or school performances, special moments or awards, last day – to print and send home to parents. The trouble with that plan is the reality piece – time to print them all and the amount of color ink that your school may (or may not) have.
Then there’s that whole remembering to do it part once all the assessing, lesson planning, grading, data collecting, conferencing, communicating with parents, staff meetings (wash, rinse, repeat) is done. Here is a quick and easy idea that parents and students will LOVE at the end of your school year.
In the fall, once you have your class list – and before things get too crazy busy – set up a digital folder for each of your students labeled with his/her name. On the first day of school make sure to take a picture of each and every student in your classroom. You may want to use the signs we have created here: 1st Day of School Signs Then digitally file each picture into the respective students’ folders.
As the year moves forward always keep your Smartphone or digital camera at the ready to take pictures of students in various settings and activities – of course the memorable ones or fun times, but don’t underestimate the impact that a snapshot of a student grasping a concept for the first time or quietly reading with a buddy can have. (Think about getting some shots from your Special Area teachers too!)
At the end of each week (or month) be sure to download these pictures into each student’s digital folder. At the end of the year you will have an entire “yearbook” of individualized photos to send to each parent! To round out that yearbook you might want to use our last day of school signs found on our family site: Last Day of School Signs
For all of you out there who have experienced your own children coming home with “keepsakes” and have labeled tubs for each one to put these treasures into (or not – no judgment here…mine are in various places all over the house for future organization..wink, wink!), think about how nice it would be to have these pictures of their year on your computer to keep and e-mail to relatives to showcase their year in the classroom!!
