Keeping students engaged during independent reading can be a struggle at times. We were recently sent a CloudPets™ and while our little girls loved it and being able to communicate with our relatives living across the country, our thoughts immediately turned to possible classroom applications. We thought it could be a great new tool that can help you keep your students motivated and encourage them to do their best during independent reading. Along with our ideas for using CloudPets™ in the classroom, we have also created a collection of independent reading resources designed to accompany your reading workshop which we will share below.
When we first received our CloudPets™, we thought it would be a perfect fit for the classroom. We envision it becoming a source of encouragement for students during independent reading time. This can be done by picking an adult that students admire in the building. It might be the principal, librarian or any other adult helper. This adult will be asked to provide encouraging messages that can be sent via the CloudPets™.
How do we envision setting this up? Well, after purchasing your CloudPet™ from CloudPets.com or your favorite store, it is simple to set up your new friend using your phone or tablet (iPhone or Android devices.) Once it is set up, it is time to introduce your pet to the class. Or, if you are choosing to use the CloudPets™ for a select student or small group of students, introduce your friend to these students during independent reading time. We suggest having a message ready to go from the adult you have chosen encouraging the students to do their best during independent reading time. You will want to make sure students set goals and know what will earn them a message from the CloudPets™. To help you with this, we have created a collection of resources for independent reading time. Included in our collection are Caught Reading Bookmarks that can be used to recognize when students are caught doing the right thing during reading. (The file includes color and black & white versions.)
Students love getting “caught” and it’s so simple to simply walk over and add a sticker to these cute bookmarks we have made. When kids have filled their bookmarks, they can earn time with the CloudPets™. Add a little extra reward by sending home a Super Reader Certificate so parents can see their accomplishment.
We’ve also made a collection of Reading Logs that are perfect for students to use to track their independent reading. We have a variety so you can choose the ones that work best for your students.
We love that Cloudpets™ are available in a bear, puppy, kitty, bunny, and unicorn – you can choose the animal that fits your school or classroom best. CloudPets™ can also be worked into an easy morning center. They are capable of telling stories along with other features perfect for younger children (games and lullabies.)
Do you have other ideas for independent reading motivation? We would love for you to share your ideas below so other teachers can benefit as well!
