This compare and contrast activity will help you create a free writing center for your third, fourth and fifth grade students.

Try this compare and contrast activity to help your students practice their writing skills.

This can be used as a way for students to practice comparing and contrasting items through writing.

It can be a way for students to expand their vocabulary used when writing. As your children improve their skills, you can encourage them to find ways to work in stronger adjectives to describe the differences they see.

This newly updated collection contains 24 cards, each containing two topics to compare.

You will find these cards in color as well as with a white background. Print the colorful cards on heavy, white cardstock. Or, print the white cards on a color of your choice. This is designed to help you conserve colored ink.

After the cards you will find a Venn Diagram that can be used for planning. Students can write their thoughts on this graphic organizer.

Once they have shared their thoughts, the next step will be writing their ideas in a complete paragraph. You will find a lined piece of paper students can use for their writing.

Setting up your compare and contrast activity

Print your cards on card stock.

Next, laminate the cards for durability.

You will cut apart the cards and place them in a basket.

You can provide all of the cards so students have more choice or select six to eight cards that you think will be high interest.

Copy the Venn Diagram and lined paper page. Place these pages at the center.
