These resources are designed to help students work on building an understanding of the numbers 11 through 20.  Also included are resources to help students build these numbers through number bonds.

The goal of these printable activities is to help children build number sense skills.

These might fit into your kindergarten, first grade or even some second grade classrooms.

Children will work to understand the concept of composing and decomposing numbers up to 20.

What does it mean to compose and decompose numbers?

This skill involves helping children break numbers into parts.

A child might begin to understand that 2 and 3 come together to make 5.

In the case of the collection you will find here, students might begin developing an understanding that 10 and 3 come together to make 13.

About this collection for composing and decomposing numbers to 20

Monster Number Mats for 11 – 20 These can be printed in color and laminated for students needing help with understanding numbers.  They can use chips to create the number on the mats.  More advanced students can then determine how many are needed to make numbers between 11 and 20.

Number Mats 11 – 20 Similar to the above number mats but without the monster theme.

Today’s Number Is Multiple versions in color and black and white.  These are designed to be laminated for use with a dry erase marker or printed in black and white on paper so students can add to their math notebooks.

Striped Number Sort Cards  These can be used in a variety of ways.  Includes number word, number using ones units and number using 10 frame.  Teachers can use as a sorting activity at a center, as flash cards or during small group instruction.

Building Numbers Booklet  Students identify the 10s and 1s in the numbers given.  They also show each number using the 10 frames.

Monster Number Center  Includes monster cards with the numbers 11 -20 and recording pages.  Students pick a monster number and complete the half page as center work.

Practice Pages  One preprogrammed and one without dots so you can write in your own numbers.

Monster Hunt Hide the five monster cards around the room.  Students go on a hunt for the monsters and complete the matching practice page during their search.

Monster Bonds Booklet  This is designed for your students who are ready for a challenge.  Students fill in the monster bonds.  Allow students to use 10 frames or counters to assist with this task.

Monster Work Cards  These red, monster themed cards are designed for center work.  Students use counters or dry erase markers to create the number shown on the card.
