Number Bonds: Card Sort Activity

Add this number bond sort to your collection of math centers for addition fact practice.

Your students will be engaged in math fact practice with this free number bond sort.

It’s always good to add new resources to your math workshop for practicing math facts.

This is another free resource for teachers and homeschool families from The Curriculum Corner.

What are number bonds?

Number bonds provide a visual understanding of addition and subtraction.

They will show the student what two smaller number are “bonded” together to form the sum.

This means that number bonds show the part-part-whole relationship between three numbers.

In this activity, students are looking to find the sum of the two numbers provided.

We like these better than flash cards because it encourages children to think about the relationship between addition and subtraction.

Why should you use this to help your students work on mastering math facts?

This math center uses addition number bonds to help students strengthen math facts mastery.

Students sort the bonds under the number that fits in the third circle of the bond.

Answers 1 – 20 are included with over 200 matching math facts.

Working on the commutative property of addition? You will find cards that demonstrate this property.

Print all of the cards or choose the ones that fit the specific levels of individuals or groups of students.

How can I set up my number bonds sort?

  • You will find one set with a colorful background and another with a white background. Choose to print the pages that will work best for you.
  • We recommend printing on heavy, white card stock.
  • Laminate the cards for durability and cut.
  • Place the cards at a center for sorting. Because you will find so many math facts in this set, be sure to provide a just right amount for your students. While some students might like the challenge of sorting all of the cards, this may be overwhelming for many.
  • You might also include the recording page for student use.

Looking for an easy way to differentiate this work? We like the idea of putting a dot on the back to color code your cards. Maybe one group of students works on the cards with orange dots while another group pulls out the purple and orange.

This allows you to focus on your small group instruction while students are finding the cards that meet their needs.
