I’m very excited to share my first published book with our followers at The Curriculum Corner! This book evolved from a pet rock my youngest son Spencer “adopted” when he was 4. Since that time, Rocky has accompanied us on vacation, gone to the pool and even gone on walks on a leash. My son, Spencer, is the illustrator of the book. My hope is that this book with the simple pictures encourages authors in your classroom. Children can be real authors and illustrators – it is up to us as teachers to motivate them!
You can purchase Spencer & Rocky via Amazon here: Spencer & Rocky.
This book is designed to be a mentor text in your classroom. There are many types of interesting punctuation used for when you are studying punctuation during writing.
I have created these activities to be used in your classroom:
Thinking like a Writer After reading the book, the students record two examples of what writers do.
My Pet Rock Students tell about their own pet rock. You may choose to use this as a planner and have students create their own story similar to Spencer & Rocky.
Compound Words & Contractions Students search for these words in the text. They then record the words and tell the two smaller words that are joined to make each.
Word Search Students record an example of each type of word in the boxes.
