RF.2.3.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The standard says that students should:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Know and apply grade-level phonics word analysis skills in decoding words.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>a. Distinguish long and short vowels when reading regularly spelled one-syllable words.<\/li><li>b. Know spelling-sound correspondences for additional common vowel teams.<\/li><li>c. Decode regularly spelled two-syllable words with long vowels.<\/li><li>d. Decode words with common prefixes and suffixes.<\/li><li>e. Identify words with inconsistent but common spelling-sound correspondences.<\/li><li>f. This was designed to be a quick check to assess understanding before you begin teaching. Students who master this check might be ready to move on to a new phonics skill. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There is also a post assessment so that you can check growth when you finish working on the skill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can create a booklet for students to use as they work on the vowel sounds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Print the pages front to back, fold and staple your booklets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Students can then work to find examples of words that go in each category.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Finally, there is a vowel hunt for students. Begin by letting students know how many words they should find in each category.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You might encourage them to go on a search around the classroom or within a book they are reading.
