This is not a skill which comes naturally to most children.&nbsp; It is important to provide students with many opportunities for practicing so that they learn to do this as they read independently.<\/p>\n<p>When students are attempting to determine the meanings of unknown words they use the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>schema<\/li>\n<li>text clues<\/li>\n<li>picture clues<\/li>\n<li>rereading of the text<\/li>\n<li>thinking it through<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>One book we like for modeling this skill for students is <em>Where Are You Going, Manyoni?<\/em> by Catherine Stock.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>This is one of our favorites because it has many opportunities for the teacher to demonstrate the skill that is being taught.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>We like to use a chart that has three columns.&nbsp; You will find our chart here:&nbsp; <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thecurriculumcorner.com\/wp-content\/pdf\/inferences\/words.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Inferring New Words Organizer<\/a><\/strong>.&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.thecurriculumcorner.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/inferpic.jpg\"><noscript><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-3854\" title=\"Inferring to Determine New Words Graphic Organizer\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thecurriculumcorner.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/inferpic-1024x791.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"582\" height=\"484\"><\/noscript><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-3854 lazyload\" title=\"Inferring to Determine New Words Graphic Organizer\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thecurriculumcorner.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/inferpic-1024x791.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"582\" height=\"484\" data-pin-media=\"https:\/\/www.thecurriculumcorner.com\/thecurriculumcorner123\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/inferpic.jpg\" id=\"mv-trellis-img-2\" data-trellis-processed=\"1\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\">Our Approach<\/h3>\n<p>When we work on this skill we spend the first day modeling for students.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The second day we ask for student input and then continue to work on the skill during reading mini-lessons until we feel like students are ready to try it out on their own.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>When we get down to just a few students who are not yet ready, we focus on pulling those students for intervention practice during independent reading.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\">Big Words for Little People Game<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">A fun book to use to create a game is <em>Big Words for Little People <\/em>by Jamie Lee Curtis.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">You will work backwards when you play this game.&nbsp; Read the definition for each word in the book.&nbsp; Then have students guess the word.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Students get practice inferring the big word when they play this game.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">We have found that this game has become an easy morning center for us.&nbsp; Students take turns reading the clues and have their group members guess the word.&nbsp; It involves reading, vocabulary and reading aloud for fluency practice!&nbsp; Plus, there is no work for us to put it together.<\/p>\n<p>Our complete unit on teaching students how to infer when reading can be found here:&nbsp;
