Be sure to download the new materials if you have previously grabbed a set. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-heading\">What is a theme?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A theme is the moral, message or lesson that is shared in a story.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It can be thought of as the big idea. The previous set stated that the theme is a single word but I&rsquo;ve since learned that the theme should be a complete sentence. The topic is what is a single word. So if the topic is honesty, the theme might be honesty is the best policy. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Students might be helped with finding the topic by thinking of it like a hashtag. It could be the hashtag the main character would add at the end of their social media post.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The theme is different from the main idea. The main idea tells us what happened. The theme tells us what message the author is trying to share with us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When working to determine the theme, you must first read the entire text.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You will then pause and think about what the author wanted you to learn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Usually, a reader will need to infer the theme. Some are designed to be used as is and some are interactive so that you and students will add to them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You will find the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Theme definition and tips for finding the theme<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Theme definition with spot for identifying themes in current books &ndash; this is designed so you can have students record their responses on post-it notes and then they will stick it on the poster.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Topic definition plus a list of common topics in children&rsquo;s books.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Theme definition plus examples of topics and themes that children might find in books.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Theme examples that students might encounter in books.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Theme vs Main Idea &ndash; As a class, determine the theme and main idea in books you have read together. This is designed for you or students to write on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Find the theme! Students will read the main idea and determine possible themes that would fit. There can be more than one correct answer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Searching for the theme. Begin by writing a theme in each box. Students then go on a search for books that fit the themes. This was designed to be an anchor chart you print as a poster.
