during Writer’s Workshop. And then there are those who just need a little inspiration to get them creatively writing.

Of course one way to get these students thinking of and remember ideas is to brainstorm spring story starter topics together and have them write things in their Writer’s Notebooks or add them to a page in their Writing Binders. This is always our first suggestion so that students always have “go to” place to get a little inspiration for their writing.

Seasonal writing can be a great idea too. Changing weather, upcoming holidays, favorite seasonal activities, family traditions and sports can provide a variety of topics for students.

Another idea is to provide lists for them, and that was the intent behind these lists of spring story starters for writing. We have three suggestions for how these might be used:

Display the lists in your classroom for students to go look at during independent writing time if they are between stories and are needing some inspiration for a new piece.

Copy the pages and have students place them in their Writer’s Notebooks or Writing Binders. To conserve paper you might consider shrinking these size 50% and copying back-to-back to get them all on one page.

Set these out at a writing or morning work center as an option for students.

Does your district require monthly writing prompts for assessment purposes? If these aren’t already chosen, you might find an idea or two in the lists for March, April and May that we have created.

We have provided these in three easy downloads so you can print just those that you need for this time of year.

Spring Story Starters:

March

April

May

You will also find our student writing binder here which contains many other student resources for your Writer’s Workshop:

Student Writing Binder

These spring story starters are just what you need for student writing inspiration.
