These books can be shared as read alouds. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They would also be good books to place at a listening center. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If a recording is not available, record yourself or a student in an older grade reading the book aloud. Below we have included ideas for diversity to accompany the reading of each book along with printables when needed. If you have additional ideas for diversity for these read alouds, please share your them below!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><em>Shades of People<\/em> by Shelley Rotner and Sheila M Kelly<\/li><li><em>The Colors of Us<\/em> by Karen Katz<\/li><li><em>The Skin You Live<\/em> In by Michael Tyler<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>As you read each book, spend time locating the title and author.&nbsp;Also find the front and back covers along with the title pages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Introduction to Diversity in the Classroom<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Discussion Starter: <\/strong>What colors of skin can different people have?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our first page contains an assortment of faces. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Discuss with your class different skin colors. You might even provide students with multicultural crayons or markers that have a range of skin colors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As you talk about different skin colors, students can color their paper using different crayons. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These pages can serve as a visual representation for students throughout your diversity study.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These can be helpful for young children because they provide concrete evidence for understanding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-heading\">Shades of People<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Introduce vocabulary: Shades &ndash; a range of colors between dark and light (for example navy, blue and sky blue)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To help students better understand the concept of shades, place a large bucket of assorted crayons in the center of your class discussion. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Have each student find a red crayon (make sure there are not enough true red crayons for every student.) &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When each student has found a crayon, compare the different colors they see and explain that each is a shade of red. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Students can follow up by coloring the Shades of Colors page. This can be done with different shades of any color.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><strong>Diversity Egg Lesson <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is an older lesson that is often used with younger students. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One page in the book <em>Shades of People<\/em> says &ldquo;Our skin is just our covering, like wrapping paper.&nbsp;And, you can&rsquo;t tell what someone is like from the color of their skin.&rdquo; &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Use the Eggs: Alike or Different recording page. &nbsp;Show the students different eggs (such as white and brown).&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Have them show what they see on the outside.&nbsp;Then, they will predict&nbsp;what the inside of the egg will look like based on their observations. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once the eggs are open, students will record what they see. Compare what we learned from the eggs and relate it to the passage in the book.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This book may also be used as a mentor text for writing workshop. Create a text for the class called &ldquo;Shades of our School&rdquo;. Take pictures of adults and children around the school. &nbsp;Walk around the school as a class and look for shades of people in other places throughout the school (cafeteria, office, library etc.) &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Use the pictures in a class book.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Put a picture on each page and then do a group writing activity using two sentences.&nbsp;One will tell what the person looks like on the outside.&nbsp;The next will tell something about the person on the inside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-heading\">The Colors of Us<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: normal;\">Introduce Vocabulary:&nbsp;<\/span><strong>Similar &ndash;&nbsp;<\/strong>When things are alike. &nbsp;<strong>Different &ndash;<\/strong>&nbsp;When things are not alike.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To reinforce the vocabulary words, we suggest using concrete items. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gather familiar items, possibly an apple, orange, chocolate and lollipop. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Have students identify which items are similar and explain how they are similar (an apple and orange are fruits, shaped like spheres, juicy.) &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then students will find objects that are different (an orange and chocolate.) <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They will explain how the items are different. &nbsp;Continue to review these vocabulary words throughout the week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The book <em>Colors of Us<\/em> can be used to get children thinking while they listen to the story. &nbsp; While reading ask questions:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>After looking at the cover of the book and hearing the title of the story what do you think this book will be about?<\/li><li>After reading the first page asks, &ldquo;How old is Lena?&rdquo;&nbsp; After soliciting answers ask &ldquo;Why does Lena say she is the color of cinnamon?&rdquo;<\/li><li>After reading about Isabella ask, &ldquo;Does Isabella&rsquo;s skin color look like the color of chocolate cake?&rdquo;<\/li><li>After reading the story ask, &ldquo;Do you think it is okay that Lena and her friends are different colors?&rdquo;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Lead a class discussion on foods that each child&rsquo;s skin can be compared to. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Create a class book using our This is my skin page. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Students will share their name and the food they can compare their skin color to. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Have students draw a picture of themselves or take a photo to add that emphasizes the color.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We have created an anchor chart that might help children get started. &nbsp;<a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thecurriculumcorner.com\/thekindercorner\/wp-content\/pdf\/diversity\/foods.PDF\" target=\"_blank\">I am the color of&hellip; Anchor Chart<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Hand Print Art<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can use the lined pages with a box that we included in our diversity download or blank white paper. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Provide students with yellow, white, brown and red paints. They can then mix until they get the perfect shade for their skin.
