Using Biographies for 7 Habits and SEL Lessons
In my sixth-grade classroom, I have found that using biographies can be a motivating way to engage students in SEL and 7 Habits lessons.
Not only are students motivated by reading about others, it also gives us an opportunity to work vocabulary, reading, and writing into these parts of our day.
I have focused on finding subjects students do not yet know a lot about. This makes the reading new and pushes students to look for text evidence during our class discussions.
This Keala Settle Passage & Responses
I chose Keala Settle as a focus because of the song meaning behind the song she is most known for, This is Me.
When we read this biography in my room, I combine it with an activity where we analyze and sing the song. It can be a good beginning of the year activity as students are getting to know each other.
The passage shares how Settle has felt like an outsider despite the fact that she is a famous actress and singer. It also includes two quotes from her that can be used to add to your class discussion.
There are three options for a response. I use the one that connect to Leader in Me but in a reading classroom, the first referencing character traits could be a good fit.
