## Our free beginning fractions activities have been created to help your students who are being introduced to fraction concepts.

We have created these fraction activities to help introduce the concept of fractions to your students.

This free collection of resources will help as your students begin to understand the meaning of fractions. We have worked to create ideas that will be engaging for your students.

In second grade, students are being introduced to fractions. Students are expected to partition circles and rectangles into two, three and four equal shapes.

They will also be asked to use the words halves, thirds, half of and a third of.

Students will describe the whole as two halves, three thirds and four fourths.

The final requirement is that students will recognize that equal shares of identical wholes need not have the same shape.

The free resources for teachers that we have created are available below. As this is an older collection, each resource is being provided as an individual download. Click on the bold title for each resource to download each printable.

**You will find the following printables:**

Word Cards Students match the fraction with the words.

My Name in Fractions Students write their names and then identify the fraction of letters in their names that are vowels and consonants.

My Fraction Book Print, cut and staple to create a beginning fractions booklet for students.

Fraction Mat Print in color and laminate for an easy center. Students use a dry erase marker to write the fraction for each shaded shape.

Fraction Cards Sort Students match the fraction, picture and words.

Pizza Fractions Students practice cutting the pizza into parts and then write the fraction.

Lego Fractions 1 You will need to provide Legos for this activity. Students follow the directions using their Legos and then write a fraction. For students who need more of a challenge, we have created Lego Fractions 2.
