If you haven’t read this book before, pick it up and give it a try! This book has been one of my favorites for my younger students. I think there are so many fun possibilities.
In this book, a young girl goes to the market to pick up some ingredients to make an apple pie. When she gets there, she finds the market is closed. She decides to travel the world to find what she needs for her pie. At each stop you learn a little about her destination and what ingredient she picks up.
I’ve used this book many times earlier in my teaching when it was common practice to create a interdisciplinary study around a single book.
With my students I have created passports, suitcases and done social studies lessons about each country visited in the book. Students can even do science lessons involving eggs, apple or salt water.
For this set of resources, my goal was to create a set of centers that can be used for a week long focus on the book during your rotations. If you do some more in depth work with the book, please share any of your ideas below!
As a fun wrap up you might even choose to make an apple pie with your class! One year I extended this lesson by having my students make ice cream to top the pie.
How to Make an Apple Pie and See the World Collection
Task Cards The first part of this collection is a set of task cards. These are designed to accompany many of the printables we have created. They will be the directions you place at each center for your students to use as a reminder.
Story Maps There are two of these so you can choose which fits your students best.
Flip Book This flip book is designed to go in an interactive notebook. Students cut the outside shape and then cut on the dotted lines. They will lift the flaps and write about the main character, problem and solution under the flaps. On top they will draw a picture to show each.
Sequencing Sentences These cards have the most important events from the book. Students can use the book to help them place the events in the correct order. You might also have students use these cards for fluency work.
Parts of Speech Search This center includes word cards for sorting plus a recording page.
