Should-Out slips can be a meaningful way to build a strong classroom community and to help students recognize their classmates.
Use Shout-Out Slips or EBA Deposit Slips to help students recognize their classmates.
You will find both emotional bank account deposit slips and shout out slips.
This is another free resource for teachers and homeschool families from The Curriculum Corner.

What are Shout-Out Slips and EBA Deposit Slips?
My school is in our second year of implementing Leader in Me. I am a member of the Lighthouse Team and we have been working on giving teachers small pieces they can easily implement in the classroom. We are looking to build some consistency, so we are trying to create resources that fit our school, and we know teachers can use right away.
One new procedure we are implementing is creating emotional bank accounts for students. In a school not following a 7 Habits program, these could be called shout outs.
These slips are used to recognize something a classmate has done. These can be for a small act or something larger.
The idea behind these slips is that you are working to help others feel good about what they are doing. Building these positive feelings will help build a stronger classroom community.
At my school, our students will have a spot in their leadership binders to keep their EBA deposit slips. These can be a reminder for students on a rough days.
How to use these slips
We will be setting aside a small amount of time each week as we first implement this process.
In our rooms, we will give students two slips. One slip will be blank. Another slip will have a student name prewritten on it. This will help us ensure that every student receives a slip each week. I will also have a spot in the room where students can get additional slips as needed during the week.
I plan on having a sleeve in student leadership binders where students can place their slips.
My hope is that having students spend time recognizing each other will help to build a stronger sense of community in our room. One of school goals is building a sense of belonging and this is one idea to help make that happen.
Writing the slips
Along with the slips, you will also find a list of sentence stems. These can be used to help children who are unsure of how to start the slips they are handing out. The stems can be helpful for students who might feel a little overwhelmed as this process begins.
The slips can start with ideas such as these:
•I noticed that…
•It was kind of you to…
•It was thoughtful of you to…
•Thank you for…
•I appreciate how you…
•You showed leadership when you…
•I felt supported when…
•I saw you working hard when…
•You helped our class by…
•I liked how you…
•You made a difference when…
•I was inspired when you…
•You set a great example when…
•I am grateful that you…
•You helped me when…
•I saw you practicing Habit ___ when you…
•You showed a positive attitude by…
•You encouraged others by…
