These narrative lockers are designed to help students teach others about themselves.
About these lockers
A variety of printables have been created for this activity. The ideal behind the plan is that students will create a locker that helps others learn who they are. It is a place where they can highlight their strengths. Hopefully, it is also a spot that makes students smile as they approach their locker in the morning.
This idea started as a way to highlight classroom jobs and school leadership roles from Leader in Me. As I spent more time working on it, I thought of new ways students could personalize their lockers.
I also like that this activity is one that will allow students to talk some as they work. These types of projects are a great way for children to begin learning more about each other and to begin building a feeling of community in the classroom.
I am excited to get these started when school starts. I’ll come back and add pictures to show the progress.
You will find the following materials:
Narrative Locker Slide – This slide introduces that first steps of creating a narrative locker. I plan on displaying the directions along with the slide that has a list of words. The first step is for students to choose one word that tells others about them. They will decorate one of the flags using this word. The next flag will simply have their name. Finally, I want all students to share a strength. We will brainstorm ideas for this together so that all children feel like they are proud of their answer.
Planning Page & Pennants – There is a student handout that accompanies this slide. Students will plan their flags that will be placed on their lockers with the help of the slide and printable. There are also pennants students will use following their planning. When finished, they will be laminated and then displayed on their lockers.
Membership Tags – These pages help recognize the school groups students are a part of.
Locker Badges – These are designed to showcase hobbies outside of school and jobs within the building. Along with these, there are birthday badges and blank badges to create your own.
Accomplishments – Students earn these for different accomplishments throughout the year. Meeting goals, spreading happiness, communicating well, and problem solving are included. There are a total of 20 accomplishments.
I plan on printing the tags and badges on colorful cardstock and then laminating them. Some students might prefer white cardstock and the option to color them before they are laminated. Because of time, I am going to begin with the colorful cardstock idea.
