About this project
In my 6th grade humanities classroom, I was looking for a way to help students identify specific aspects of the books they were reading for independent reading. This project is designed for fiction books.
We needed to work on plot maps. I had not done enough work on rising and falling action thorughout the school year.
Even though we had spent plenty of time on character traits, I still felt like the skill of identifying character traits was mastered. Too often, students would want to put a response like kind with the reasoning “because they were nice”. I was really trying to get students to identify solid evidence that supportive the specific traits that were chosen. I also had a list of traits students could not use – I wanted words that held a little more power when others read them.
At the same time, we were continuing our journey with Leader in Me. Because of this, I wanted students to connect the reading with two of the habits.
I found requiring evidence when identifying a connection to a habit was a great way to discourage the use of AI when completing a project. Most of the time, students cannot ask a search to identify a habit a character displayed and also receive text evidence in the response.
For the final project, I copied the design on larger paper. The final products were amazing!
