This 6th Grade Number Sense Math Check is designed to be a pre and post assessment for number sense standards in your math classroom.

This 6th Grade Number Sense Math Check is designed to be a pre and post assessment for number sense standards in your math classroom.

This set of math checks is designed to help you assess your students number sense skills.

This math check is slightly different than our other ones. The purpose of our other math check is to assess grade level standards.

This set is different because there are few number sense standards in 6th grade. Many of the number skills needed to be successful in 6th grade math are covered in standards in other grades.

However, we know that not all students come to 6th grade with these skills. Because of this, we have created a way for you to quickly see if there are gaps you need to fill in your classroom before or while you are addressing 6th grade math standards.

In many states, sixth grade number sense begins with an assumption that students have mastered place value skills. Because we know that many students need to begin the year by reviewing these skills, this math check begins with some skills that are carried over from the fourth and fifth grades.

These assessment pages can be used as pre and post assessment checks to chart growth.

Use these problems to help guide your teaching at the beginning of a unit or to help you structure your reteaching groups as you progress.

You will also find an answer key.

You will find problems covering each standard along with the standard listed at the top of the page or section.

Problems for the following standards are included:

  • Understand the place value system.
  • Compare two numbers using >, =, and < symbols.
  • Compare numbers with decimals and fractions

The math check created has been designed to touch upon each of these skills.

We will be creating a separate, computation assessment. We do understand that some school districts group beginning number sense with computation. You will be able to pull indicators from each set to fit your school.

We do understand for an end of unit test, you will might need a larger, more in depth test. This resource is not that test. Instead, it is a way for you to take a quick feel of your students understanding of the content.
