# Beginning Fractions for Second Grade

## This is another free resource for teachers and homeschool families from The Curriculum Corner.

This free collection of resources will help as your students begin to understand the meaning of fractions.

We have worked to create ideas that will be engaging for your students.

In second grade, students are being introduced to fractions. Students are expected to partition circles and rectangles into two, three and four equal shapes.

They will also be asked to use the words halves, thirds, half of and a third of.

Students will describe the whole as two halves, three thirds and four fourths.

The final requirement is that students will recognize that equal shares of identical wholes need not have the same shape.

Fraction Cards Sort These cards include the following:

• Shapes divided into equal parts
• Parts of a group
• Fractions
• Fraction words

You can print these four pages on card stock and then laminate for durability.

My Name in Fractions Students will write their names. They will count the vowels and consonants they find. Finally, they will write a fraction to show the number of vowels and consonants in their names.

My Fraction Book This is a beginning practice booklet. After printing, cut and staple the book. This booklet provides a good base for understanding fractions.

Write the Fractions Worksheets There are three different pages. Students will write the fraction that shows each shape.

Pizza Fractions Students will divide and color the pizzas according to the directions. They will write a fraction to represent each pizza.

LEGO Children will need LEGOs to create these pages. They will follow the directions to create a group of LEGOs. They will then draw a picture to show the blocks they gather. The final page encourages children to make their own LEGO directions.
