How can I help students learn to make a number?
If you are working on helping students understand that there are different ways to make a number, I suggest starting with five and ten frames.
You can find printable five and ten frames within this free Math Toolkit.
For younger students, begin with 5 frames.
Give students two different colors of counters. They will begin exploring by filling the five frames with any combination.
Talk about the different ways they can make five.
Help them see that 4 + 1 = 5 as well as 2 + 3 and 5 + 0. Some children might discover that they can also use three numbers to form the sum.
Other children might be ready to begin with 10 frames.
They will complete the same type of activity with the 10 frame.
Exploring these making numbers worksheets
This download contains 16 free pages.
Each page focuses on a single sum.
The first 8 pages ask students to find the number that will not be used to form each sum. They will put an x on the number that is not needed.
The next 8 pages ask students to color in the box to build the number.
You will want to have students choose two different colors of crayons or colored pencils.
Below the boxes, students will record the math fact they are showing.
Their goal is to share a different math fact in each box.
