Magazine Article Graphic Organizers

Add these magazine article graphic organizers to your collection of informational text resources.

These organizers have been designed to help students when they are reading magazine articles from places such as Scholastic Scope or Newsela.

This download is another free resource for teachers and homeschool families from The Curriculum Corner.

Help with Informational Text

I have been using Scope and Newsela in my sixth-grade classroom and feel like both have been valuable resources. It is great to have so many news articles that are engaging for my students to use during reading.

One thing I think I can do better at is helping students learning to find the important information in the articles they are reading. Too often, especially with Newsela, I have assigned the reading as an independent task. I think I need to take a step back and work on helping students learn to read these types of passages.

Students tend to read the words and not think as they read. They take the quiz and do poorly. I am working on finding ways to help students think as they read so that they make sense of the new information.

Magazine Article Graphic Organizers

One part of my plan are these graphic organizers I have created.

I made a range of options – mostly because I am not yet sure how the lessons will look. You can pick and choose to find what works best for your students.

First, I will plan on modeling how to use one of the organizers so they can understand expectations and receive guided practice.

After some guided practice, my plan will be to let students choose their own organizers.

These organizers might be used in small groups or with a partner. I do not plan on having students complete an organizer with every article we read. However, I am hoping by working through a few, children will begin to better understand each article as they read on their own in the future.
