Punctuating Dialogue Practice Checks
Use these punctuating dialogue practice pages to check in with your students.

About these pages
You can use these pages to check in on student progress. In my room, I used these as a precheck, mid-check, and final quiz.
Each page has the beginning of a story that requires dialogue.
Students will read the story and add the missing punctuation marks.
Once they have added the punctuation, they will add the next three lines.
The rules for completing the pages correctly are at the bottom. Students are also asked to highlight where the text is indented and to underline the dialogue tags. So often, students struggle with correctly indenting text when they are writing dialogue. Having to highlight the space made students more likely to follow the correct steps when they added their own dialogue at the end.
The back includes the rules of writing dialogue along with a list of dialogue tags that might be used. Students could use words from the list or think of their own.
The pages were a good way to have evidence of the progress my students had made. Because most of the writing was done, these were also quick to administer. I wanted to make sure students knew the correct way to punctuate dialogue. I did not want to spend a full class period each time I did the checks
These took about ten minutes and provided the information I needed. I was able to see who needed additional instruction and who could move on to the next skill.
