Working on creating fraction number lines

Begin by creating a hands on example for children to use when exploring.

We like the idea of using a rope and clothespins to create a real number line students can work with.

After stringing up the rope, give students clothespins for the cards.

Begin by creating a whole number line from 0 through 10. While this will be a simple task for third graders, it will help students build understanding.

Once students have practice with the whole number line, begin working on fractions.

You can give a student a 0, 1 and 1/2. The student should then place the cards in order.

While they are completing the task, talk about the 1/2 needing to be placed exactly in the middle of the 0 and 1.

You can move on to the thirds and have students place the 0, 1, 1/3 and 2/3. Again, talk about even spacing.

Students can continue building number lines as they are practicing.

Printable worksheets

The worksheets we have created will help students continue to build their understanding.

Along with placing fractions, they will also work on representing fractions by coloring parts of shapes.

Other pages will ask students to complete the number lines by filling in the blank spots.

Remember to use hands-on teaching methods before presenting students with worksheet practice.
