The advancements of ancient Greece

These passages are designed to help your students learn more about how the Greeks have impacted our lives today. Many of the inventions and advancements shared might not be exactly the same as what we use today. However, the ideas created at the time have been built upon to help create new ideas.

Encourage students to talk about how each of the ideas might have influenced or allowed something we have today to be invented. There might be many steps or just a few steps in between what the Greeks used and what we use.

You can have students read the ideas they are most interested in and then share what they have learned with others.

Some students might prefer to research a different advancement and to write their own passage.

Others might want to work to find photos or to draw pictures to add to the information in the passages.

You will also find a recording sheet that can be used if you would like.

You will find information about the following:

  • Clepsydra (a type of water clock for telling time)
  • Theater mechanics (the ekkyklema or a wheeled platform used in theater performances and the mechane or a big crane for lifting actors into the air.
  • Antikythera mechanism (an ancient computer the Greeks used to track the movement of stars and planets)
  • Astrolabe (used sky to help sailors navigate at night)
  • Archimedes’ screw (used to transport water)
  • Greek fire (a secret weapon used by the Greeks that could burn on water)
