Building Background Knowlege

These passages were written to use to help build background knowledge in my classroom.

We were preparing to read a Scholastic Scope article about the soccer team who became trapped in the cave in Thailand.

I was working to help my students learn about caves so they could visualize parts of the story better.

This ended being a very high interest activity. My students were more engaged than I anticipated.

Students worked in groups to read and take notes about what they learned. They recorded the key points on one of the pages at the end that had four boxes. Students added a title and then used bullet points to share.

I encouraged students to add pictures to their work when possible.

This was good practice for my students in reading informational text and then picking out the most important parts.

This activity ended up spanning many parts of our reading over a week. It was not the original plan but I felt like the teamwork and quality of the work I was seeing was worth the extra time.
