What is mental math?
When you are helping children learn to solve math problems in their heads, you are helping to build mental math skills.
This occurs when children are doing math in their head. They are not writing out their work using pencil and paper.
It’s a skill that helps children grow as mathematicians. As adults, we rely on mental math in our daily lives when we are calculating a tip or adding up what we are spending at the store. It can be helpful for children to begin to develop these skills.
When working on mental math in the classroom, I would often give a multi-step problem and add pauses in between each part.
For example, I might say:
Start with the number 60. Double the number. Add 10. What is the answer?
Pausing in between each step allows the students time to calculate each step.
These types of problems are great for meaningful time fillers.
These mental math worksheets
This download contains five different worksheets for practice.
Each page contains a set of 14 or 10 similar problems.
The problems are multi-step and designed for children to be able to complete in their head as they work.
Of course, if a child will be frustrated and not just challenged, give them the option of using a whiteboard and dry erase marker. Maybe you could challenge this student to complete the final problem in their head.
