“I Can” Standards for 4th, 5th & 6th Grades

Our I Can Common Core standards for 4th through 8th grades will save you time and money as you work to integrate the standards into your curriculum.

I Can Common Core Standards

This is another free resource for teachers from The Curriculum Corner.

You will find links to our FREE I Can Common Core statements for 4th through 8th grades farther down in this post. This is the most current set of our statements.

As the original writers of the I Can Common Core statements, we felt it was important to rewrite our statements to spiral between grade levels. We also saw a need to include standards through 8th grade.

We wanted to make our statements a set that could be adopted by an entire school.

We felt that consistency in language and progress through the standards was very important in updating our content.

Find out about the history and changes we have made to our statements throughout the years.

Why we wrote our I Can Common Core Statements

When the Common Core standards were first released, we found that they were not very teacher friendly. As a result, it was difficult to take a quick glance at the standards and integrate them into planning.

In addition, it was even more difficult for students to understand expectations.

We felt that there was a need for a system that would make it easier for students to use the standards as a guide for planning.

As a result, we created our first set of I Can Common Core standards.

We have found that these can be useful to students who are learning English and also very useful to parents. It can be difficult for parents to support their children if they do not understand the goal.

We worked with teachers fluent in Spanish to have the standards translated into Spanish for grades k through 6th.

How our I Can Common Core Statements have changed since the original

We are often asked why we have changed our original “I Can” Common Core statements.

This change occurred for two reasons.

  1. First, there have been significant changes to the first set of CCSS standards that were published.  Because of this, we felt that our resources needed an update.  The old version of our standards now do not contain the correct standards.
  2. Second, after spending time looking at our first set of “I Can” statements, we felt that they could be reworded to better spiral between grade levels.  We hope you find these new resources useful!

Along with updating our I Can Common Core standards for 4th through 8th grades, we have also worked to include a wider range of materials within each grade level set.

We know that teachers have different needs when it comes to how you track and display standards in your classroom.

Currently we do not have plans to add to this collection or to make changes. However, this decision is based on current classroom needs.

Keep reading below to go to the I Can Common Core resources available for each grade level.

Within each post you will find a wide variety of resources. We have worked to include a range so that you can find items that you need for your classroom.

Also available are our I Can Common Core statements translated into Spanish for many grade levels.

Within each grade you will find checklists, posters, student checkboxes, individual statements and more!

Sorry, Kim! At this time we have no plans to create the 7th and 8th grade I Can standards. Our current focus now that we tackled 6th grade is adding lessons to our sites.

Hi Carmen and thank you! Since we are elementary teachers, we don’t really feel qualified to create the I Cans for 7th and 8th grades. We are looking into finding someone qualified who might be willing to do these for us, but we aren’t sure when we would actually have them posted.

Hi Carrie! Thanks for your inquiry. We don’t have plans to do those at this point. We are elementary school teachers and really only felt comfortable going up to 6th grade. Perhaps a future endeavor with the help of some of our friends??

Hi Patti! I am sorry, but we don’t currently have plans to create I Cans for 7th and 8th grade. Since we are elementary teachers we weren’t sure we felt qualified at this point. Maybe a future project… 🙂

I was delighed to have found these. Thank you very much. I used it at Open House so parents can be able to better understand the standards and use to reinforce concepts. I will further have my students keep a copy as their checklist to check offf when they have mastery of the standards………making them accountable for their understanding and learning.

Hi Bridget! Sorry, we don’t currently have plans to create “I Cans” for 7th and 8th grade. We are primary elementary teachers. We did create the checklists for 7th and 8th grade since we had the format and it didn’t require us to interpret the standards. Good luck!

Hi Mia! We are still working on this! Since we don’t speak Spanish we want to make sure they are done correctly! They should be posted by the end of this semester.

Hi Maureen! We don’t currently have 7th and 8th grade I Can statements, but we will by the end of July. Since we are elementary teachers we really don’t feel qualified to create those for any grade above 6th, so we have a colleague who will be working on them for us. Try back at the end of July! Thanks!

I can’t open the “I Can” chart for sixth grade. It just brings me back to the poster which you can’t copy and paste, so I need to be able to open up the poster as you note is available and recently updated.

Please e-mail it to me when it is completed, if it is unfinished.

These posters are wonderful. They’ll be visual reminders of what I say orally.

    Great job!
